Joint pain can have a variety of causes, such as overuse, an injury, or medical conditions like arthritis. Whether it’s mild or severe, joint pain can interfere with your day and restrict movement. Many treatments offer temporary relief, but only one works to heal the damage in your joint — platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections! No matter the cause of your joint pain, you should seek treatment when the pain starts interfering with your activities or doesn’t go away after conservative treatment like ice and rest.
PRP is a type of regenerative medicine that uses your own blood to help heal the damage in your joints that’s causing you pain. Plasma is the liquid component in your blood, which also contains red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The platelets are important for clotting, but also contain important growth factors.
To use PRP, your esthetician first needs to collect a sample of blood from you. Once the blood is collected, it’s spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma and platelets from the rest of the cells. The result is a concentrated amount of platelets in the plasma, which we then inject into the joint where you’re having pain and discomfort.
Aside from rebuilding damaged tissue, PRP injections also reduce inflammation and pain and stimulate joint lubrication. This lubrication eases joints’ stiffness and restores more of their overall function.
How long until I can expect results from PRP for Shoulder & Knee Pain?
The first few days following treatment, there may be an increase in discomfort. However, the healing process on a microvascular level starts almost immediately. Clinically, reduction in pain will be noticed in about 2-6 weeks. Strength and endurance may improve for up to 6-9 months. Sometimes, more than one treatment of PRP may be needed.
