What to Expect
PAIN: Mild – Moderate
POST-TREATMENT: Depending on how mild to aggressive the treatment, post treatment varies: Immediately after treatment, there will be redness and a “sunburn” feeling that can last for 30 min to 2 hours. There will be a pale (mild treatment) to dark brown “pixel” pattern (aggressive treatment) and a leathery feeling of the skin that will flake off in 4 days (Mild treatment) – 7 days (aggressive treatment). Full recovery is expected by day 5-7 and up to 10 days with a more aggressive treatment. Downtime decreases with subsequent treatments.
SOCIAL DOWNTIME: No downtime for mild treatments and up to one week with more aggressive treatments.
RESULTS: Mild treatments as quickly as 1-2 weeks after treatment and can take 30 days after aggressive treatment.
RECOMMENDED COURSE: 6-12 sessions for mild treatments (3-5 sessions for aggressive treatments) spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Results continue to improve over 6 months.

How do I know if I am a candidate for the Skin Resurfacing Laser?
A common misconception is that laser resurfacing is only safe for light skin types. While it is true that certain lasers pose a higher risk for cell damage or discoloration in darker skin, our specific laser provides safe and effective resurfacing options. For lighter-toned African American, Hispanic or Asian skin tones, Erbium laser resurfacing can be a good option, posing less risk for discoloration.
What should I expect during post-treatment?
Downtime varies on how aggressive your treatment is. Immediately after treatment, skin becomes red or appears sunburned for 24-48 hours. You can expect a rough skin texture and flaking up to 10 days post-treatment.
A light treatment requires 24 hours of no sweating. Moderate treatments require 72 hours of no sweating, and aggressive treatments vary from 5 – 10 days. Downtime is decreased by subsequent treatments.
This does not mean you have to stay at home for a month; it just means that your skin will be raw, red and scab over as it heals. You may not feel comfortable in certain social situations, and you will need to modify your activities to avoid situations where infection is possible (swimming, gym workouts, etc.).

How many treatments do I need?
While you’ll notice a difference in your skin after one treatment, we recommend 3-5 treatments (6-12 treatments for more aggressive areas) spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Results continue to improve over 6 months!
Does it hurt?
Patients and doctors commonly compare the sensation felt during laser treatments to a rubber band snapping against the skin. However, what laser resurfacing feels like depends on the laser, the depth and area of treatment, and an individual’s tolerance for pain.
How soon will I notice the results?
For light treatments, you’ll notice glowing skin after just one week! Light treatments are great for a monthly treatment and before upcoming special events (we recommend treatment one week prior to a special event).
