What Is IPL?

IPL/Dye-VL photofacial treatments is a non-ablative treatment that not only deals with skin issues but also serves to rejuvenate the skin. IPL treatments produce remarkable results by treating problems below the skin – without causing damage to the surface of the skin. IPL targets the melanin in the skin such as dark spots, sun spots, hyperpigmentation, and hemoglobin in vascular lesions such as broken capillaries and spider veins.

Over time, treatments reveal a healthier complexion, a more consistently-even skin tone, and fewer areas of hyperpigmentation. Our Beautiful Skin Estheticians offer a skin consultation prior to booking in order to discuss if this service can help you achieve your beautiful skin goals!

What Are the Benefits of IPL?

IPL/Dye-VL photofacials are an excellent skin rejuvenation treatment used to treat hyperpigmentation, sun damage, age spots, dark spots, rosacea, redness, acne scars, or fine lines and wrinkles. IPL is also commonly referred to as photofacial, photorejuvenation, or broadband light.

We use the most advanced laser on the market: the Alma Dye-VL. This laser combines two trusted technologies, pulsed dye laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) to create the new gold standard for the treatment of a variety of skin conditions.

Am I A Candidate for IPL?

An IPL photofacial works deep within the layers of your skin to improve many complexion problems (especially brown lesions and sun spots) with minimal or no downtime. Ideal candidates for IPL at Beautiful Skin Denver will have a combination of problems with their complexion, such as sun damage, rosacea, hyperpigmentation (brown spots), rough texture, large pores, redness, freckles, sun and age spots, or dilated capillaries. Our team in Denver, CO will examine your complexion to see if you are a candidate for IPL during your private consultation.

What to Expect After IPL

There is no recovery time needed with an IPL photofacial. You will leave our office with your skin a little red and swollen. This will go away on its own in about a day — it may be masked with makeup if you prefer. Beautiful Skin Denver suggests that patients apply an ointment on the skin to decrease irritation and speed healing. It may also help to take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication to help reduce swelling. Over the next 2 – 5 days, the sun damage and other irregularities that rested under the skin will come to the surface skin layers and then begin to flake off. It is critical to protect your skin with sunscreen as often as possible after a photofacial and to not pick at the flaking skin. While you will have some visible results after the first session, your skin will attain ideal results after multiple photofacial treatments. We recommend that most patients get 3 – 6 sessions performed monthly at Beautiful Skin Denver.

IPL FAQs

We recommend multiple IPL treatments as they produce very gradual, natural-looking enhancements in the quality of your complexion. Every treatment will help to reduce surface irregularities and spots. Multiple treatments also produce longer-lasting aesthetic outcomes!

While IPL can drastically improve your skin’s appearance within a week or two of the first treatment, multiple sessions are recommended for maximum results. The number of sessions recommended depends on the area and severity of the problem and thus is highly individualized. The average patient undergoes three sessions per area treated.

To prepare for IPL therapy, please avoid sun exposure and self-tanners for 2 – 4 weeks prior to the procedure. You might need to discontinue the use of Retin-A/Renova for 1 to 2 weeks prior to your procedure, and we may recommend that you avoid taking OTC blood thinners and anti-inflammatory medications one week before the treatment to help prevent bruising (all recommendations will be discussed during your consultation). You also need to use sunscreen between treatments.

IPL photofacials are one of the safest light-based treatments on the market! Photorejuvenation causes little to no pain during and after treatment, and any side effects to your skin usually vanish within a few hours and up to a few days after the treatment.

Clients may experience minor, temporary side effects such as swelling, redness, bruising, blisters, or crusting though this is not common. These side effects are only temporary, however, and tend to naturally subside two or three days following your treatment.

**Please note that the treated areas will be extremely sun-sensitive following treatment and that excessive exposure to damaging UV rays can negatively affect your results. We also recommend using SPF 35+ sunscreen to help prevent further skin damage after treatment.

How long do these results last? While some clients notice visible skin improvements after their first session, the best results are noticeable about a month after a full series of treatments have been completed. Different levels of improvement following each session varies based on skin color, level of pigmentation and/or dark spots, and age of the skin. Most clients experience an incremental improvement in blotchiness, redness, age spots, and sunspots over time with continued treatment. The results of IPL can last for years – as long as the skin is cared for properly with a sufficient skincare routine and sun protection!

IPL procedures last about 30 minutes to one hour per session (depending on how large the area being treated is). A full-face treatment takes only about 10-15 minutes. Since you can apply make-up right after, IPL photofacials can be done on your lunch break or in the morning before you start your day since it’s such a quick procedure and requires zero downtime!

IPL photofacials are suitable for both men and women with dark spots, age spots, sun damage, and rosacea. It also has indications for fine lines and wrinkles, red complexion, acne scars, and large pores. IPL tends to work best on clients with a light to medium complexion, who do not have severe sun damage.
